Joists spaced too far apart. Closer centres cost a little more in timber and make the difference between a deck that feels solid and one that moves underfoot.

Standing water and green boards

Decking needs airflow underneath and a slight fall. Without both it stays wet, goes slippery and rots early.

A garden on a slope

Sleepers or a raised frame can create a level area without the cost of full landscaping and retaining walls.

Timber or composite decking?

Both can be fitted. Timber costs less up front and needs treating. Composite costs more and needs very little. The frame work is similar either way.

Will I need planning permission?

Usually not for a low deck, but raised platforms and anything near a boundary can be different. Check with Bristol City Council or North Somerset Council, and you will be told if a job looks like it needs it.

Can you build over an existing patio?

Often yes, provided drainage and levels work. It is assessed on site.
